Abstract

Examined rates of attempted and completed suicide among the Jews confined by the Nazis in the Łódź ghetto, from 1941 to 1944. The data are based on the Chronicles, archival records kept secret from the Nazis, which recorded aspects of life in the ghetto, including suicide. In June 1940, there were 160,320 Jews in the ghetto, of whom 153,949 were inhabitants of Łódź.

RESULTS show the suicide rate was extremely high, 70.4 per 100,000 per year overall;rates were 44.3 for completed suicide and 26.2 for attempted suicide. The epidemiology of suicide in the ghetto is described, including age and sex distributions, monthly rates (a Spring peak), day of the week rates, suicide methods and motives.
