Abstract

The study of psychopathic traits in children and youth vastly increased after Forth, Hart, and Hare published a first paper on the topic in 1990. This state-of-the-art review of psychopathic traits in children and youth focuses on the: (a) reflection on the construct, while approaching historical, conceptual, ethical and legal issues; (b) etiological theories most referred to in the literature, highlighting the importance of considering an integrative etiological perspective; (c) assessment issues, including the existing assessment measures; and (d) treatment needs and available treatment efforts. By discussing the state-of-the-art on the topic of psychopathic traits in children and youth, we will present possible avenues for research and for preventive and intervention effective efforts as the study of child and adolescent psychopathy progresses.
