Abstract

The Medical Outcome Study - Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) is widely used to measure social support among different population. This study aimed to examine psychometric properties of Malay version MOS-SSS among Malaysian community-dwelling older adults. A cross sectional, validation study was conducted among 295 respondents. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed first-order four-factor model showed a good fit (χ2 = 379.92, P <0.001; χ2/df = 2.62; CFI = 0.926; TLI = 0.913; RMSEA = 0.074; SRMR = 0.064) and strong construct validity. The second-order four-factor model empirically demonstrated that social support was predominantly influenced by affective support and positive social interaction. High correlation with other social support questionnaire indicated for concurrent validity. All factors showed an excellent reliability (Cronbach's alpha ≥ 0.79). The Malay version MOS-SSS demonstrates a good validity and reliability to measure social support among older adults living in community in Malaysia.
