Abstract

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are widely expected to improve travel opportunities for older people. However, despite an established body of knowledge regarding the factors that influence personal mobility as people age, there has been limited assessment of how AVs might interact with these factors. The potential for driverless cars to pose adverse impacts on the elderly has similarly received limited critical research. This paper reports upon a systematic literature review, compiling research on AVs against wider theory on the travel behaviours of older people. A conceptual framework of policy interactions is devised, and corresponding scenarios of potential mobility politics are presented. It is concluded that the implications of AVs for older people are likely to be varied and, importantly, will be influenced by policy responses.
