Abstract

This article discusses how a rollover is crash is typically split into three phases during crash investigations. The first phase is the loss of control or yaw phase, the second phase is the trip phase and the third phase is the roll phase. During the first phase, the driver's steering results in losing control of the vehicle. The second phase begins when the trialing side tires of the vehicle lift off the ground. The trip phase ends when the leading side tires lift off the road and the vehicle becomes airborne and begins to rollover until it comes to a rest. Crash investigation of vehicle involved in the type of crash involves determining the distance over which each phase of the crash and determining vehicle deceleration during each phase of the crash.
