Abstract

This article presents the results of a test that estimates vehicle impact speeds using conventional crash reconstruction methods and an event data recorder. The test also compares the estimates with vehicle instrumentation observations from two vehicles of the crash, a Ford Crown Victoria and a VW Passat. The data shows that the delta-V data alone is not sufficient in estimating head-on impact speeds. The greatest reduction in uncertainty in estimating impact speeds results when all available data support data fusion.
