Abstract

This study examined the prevalence of traumatic experiences and their relationship to psychological disorders in the Iranian population. Four hundred sixty individuals selected from nine districts of Tehran completed the Life Events Checklist found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the General Health Questionnaire-28. The results showed that 89.2% of the participants had experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives. These findings also indicated differences between people with different genders, education levels, and marital status in traumatic experiences and psychological disorder. The prevalence of traumatic experiences in Iran is similar to that in other countries, and psychological problems are highly prevalent in the population.
