Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of traffic signal intergreen duration. The proposed ITE guidelines for intergreen duration define the purpose of two parts - warning amber and all-red clearance. The amber warning time must be set so that all drives have a real choice zone on the approach, between having to stop and having to continue because they are too close to the stop line. The choice zone should be as narrow as possible and there should be no dilemma zone per any reasonable driver and vehicle.
