Abstract

Four quantities are considered for comparison for the case of the minor-road driver wishing to merge with or cross a single traffic stream which has exclusive priority. The authors present the mathematical models and describe the more realistic situation in which the only information available is the distribution of gaps in the main traffic stream and the distribution of those that are accepted, both these distributions being readily observable. Equations for the formulation of gap acceptance criteria and related distributions are given.
