Abstract

A sample of slow drivers taken from two-lane main roads showed that their speedometer error was no more than 1.4 km/h greater than that of a control sample and therefore did not explain their lower speed. The interviews indicated that occasional slow drivers drive slowly because they have plenty of time to complete their journey rather than because they are concerned about such things as safety factors, while those who always drive slowly report doing so for both time and safety reasons. The conscious preference to drive slowly should be taken into account as an inter-individual variance which should be accepted and coped with. To counteract problems to other traffic in terms of safety and fluency, safe overtaking opportunities should be provided on a two-lane road network.
