Abstract

The interaction between the circulating and entry lanes is an important consideration at roundabouts with spiral markings and where there is considerable amount of potentially dangerous lane-changing. Studies show that if the angle between the entry path of a vehicle and the angle of the circulating spiral markings (angle of incidence) is less than approximately 26 degrees, drivers treat the lane markings as tram-lines instead of crossing the circulatory lane lines and proceeding to the correct lane. Vehicles can be successfully directed to the correct lane by applying dot markings and removing the relevant lane marks that appear to deflect drivers. This approach will reduce driver confusion and lead to less road accidents.
