Abstract

The lateral and longitudinal accelerations of a road vehicle during a journey are determined by the behaviour of the driver and other factors such as the route, adjacent vehicles and the weather. Research by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRI.) suggests that vehicle accelerations can be measured and processed in such a way as to yield a 'signature' which characterises the style of the driver and reflects his or her circumstances. This paper outlines how accelerations have been measured, describes alternative types of signatures and compares the signatures of 10 drivers, using a scale which may predict their accident risk. Further research is proposed to determine whether Acceleration Signatures are correlated with accident risk; if so, road safety may be improved by some of the applications suggested at the end of the paper.
