Abstract

This article summarises the results of an MSc Dissertation project conducted at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds in the summer of 2001, which measured the speeds of a large sample of drivers around four contrasting camera sites. The aim was to determine the 'sphere of influence' of the cameras, and address the question of how such systems are affecting driver behaviour along the routes in question. Previous research has tended to concentrate on trends through time such as before and after installation studies or attitudinal surveys. Certainly very little research had been done into the zone of influence of the GATSO and digital enforcement systems currently seeing a dramatic increase in use in the UK. The paper will cover: a brief review of current policy; a description of the sites and survey methods; interpretation of the statistical analysis; a comparison with historical accident data; and a series of conclusions and recommendations.
