Abstract

In their seminal paper, Lavigne and Faier-Routman (1992) presented a meta-analysis of 87 studies examining the psychological adjustment of children with physical disorders. This was the first paper to empirically synthesize this body of research to demonstrate that children with physical disorders have increased risk for overall adjustment problems, including higher levels of internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Their systematic integration of findings published over multiple decades solidified the importance of pediatric psychology. By confirming that children with physical disorders are more likely to have elevated psychosocial needs, Lavigne and Faier-Routman's paper catalyzed our field to better understand the processes underlying children's psychosocial risk.
