Abstract

Few studies have examined the phenomenon of in-law-perpetrated abuse against women within conflict-affected settings, where violence against women is already pervasive. A study in rural Cote d'Ivoire found that women whose lives were impacted by armed conflict had 1.7 times increased odds of reporting past-year in-law abuse compared to those who were not affected by crisis. Another analysis conducted among Ivorian women found that 25% of women experienced lifetime in-law abuse, which was associated with an increased risk of in-law-perpetrated reproductive coercion. Among Afghan women, 18.7% reported past-year physical in-law abuse.
