Abstract

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating nearly 100 cases of severe acute lung injury related to the use of electronic cigarettes, or “vaping.”

The cases have occurred in five states—Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Indiana, and Minnesota. Most of the people affected have been young adults. The CDC is also investigating unconfirmed cases in other states including New York, Indiana, and Utah.

From 18 June to 15 August, 14 states reported 94 cases of severe acute lung injury associated with vaping. Thirty cases occurred in the upper Midwest state of Wisconsin, and nearby Illinois reported 24 possible cases.
