Abstract

In many countries, vehicle electrification represents the main method to reduce environmental pollution. Various types of environmentally-friendly fuels are not taken into account. Among those, natural gas (methane) can be distinguished. It has a higher combustion efficiency and less pollutant emissions compared to petrol. Global reserves of natural gas are abundant. In the meantime, electrical power to charge e-vehicle batteries is generated in 70% of power stations by burning oil fuel or coal. According to the results of calculations, natural gas vehicles allow for СО2 emissions reduction by 1.5 times. Therefore, it becomes possible to meet the Euro-6 standard requirements by slightly improving the engine. According to an assessment of the environmental safety of various vehicles, conducted by the authors, natural gas vehicles are safer in terms of pollutant emissions as compared to petrol and electric vehicles during operation, even at short mileage. The article also presents results of calculating the operating costs of vehicles using various types of fuel depending on mileage.
