Abstract

Social scientists in Mexico today are facing the challenge of understanding the effects of the violence produced by the war against drug trafficking. Conducting research on human rights violations -or related issues- requires that we raise the issue of social responsibility that we can acquire as social scientists and requires that, consolidated students and researchers, we review our methodological and ethical routes in order to respect the dignity of the people who participate in the investigation. Based on this logic, in this text we resume experiences of empirical research, conducted between 2012 and 2015 in El Paso, Texas, with Mexicans in Exile, an organization that brings together 250 Mexican asylum seekers in the United States after being victimized in the context of the war against drug trafficking. The intention is to share some reflections on the collaborative research work and the power it has in the construction of testimonies about the cruelty practices that have been developed during the last decade in Mexico.


Los científicos sociales en México estamos hoy ante el reto de comprender los efectos de la violencia producida por la guerra contra el narcotráfico. Realizar investigación sobre violaciones a derechos humanos -o temas relacionados- exige que nos planteemos el asunto de la responsabilidad social que podemos adquirir como científicos sociales y requiere que, estudiantes e investigadores consolidados, revisemos nuestras rutas metodológicas y éticas a fin de respetar la dignidad de las personas que participan de la investigación. Con base en esta lógica, en este texto se retoman experiencias de investigación empírica, realizadas entre 2012 y 2015 en El Paso, Texas, con Mexicanos en Exilio, una organización que congrega a 250 mexicanos solicitantes de asilo político en Estados Unidos tras haber sido victimizados en el contexto de la guerra contra el narcotráfico. La intención es compartir algunas reflexiones sobre el trabajo de investigación colaborativo y la potencia que tiene en la construcción de testimonios sobre las prácticas de crueldad que se han desarrollado durante la última década en México.
