Abstract

Safety is a continuing concern for highway officials at all levels of government. If the safety impacts of existing and proposed programs and policies for the construction and maintenance of highway systems are to be properly assessed, it is imperative that these officials be provided with the necessary supporting data. A recently completed FHWA-sponsored study critically reviewed a number of large national data bases for applicability and utility to various areas of highway safety that are of prime concern to the FHWA. Conceptual alternatives that would improve or enhance the capability and utility of these data bases from the standpoint of highway safety analyses were developed and evaluated for feasibility and practicality, and appropriate recommendations wre made. The study results are to be considered as part of an effort to improve the capability and use of existing data bases and to offer a basis for improvements in ongoing and future data collection efforts so that the information needs of highway safety analyses may be better served.
