Abstract

This paper applies the Poincare map concept to study the effects of various vehicle parameters on anti-skid brake systems (ABS). First, dynamic equations are developed with a nonlinear tyre force model considering the different values of pressure increasing and decreasing rate. And some criteria used for ABS are adopted with the new addition of R4 prime condition for applying and releasing brake. Then the Poincare concept is introduced and the method to obtain it by computer is presented. The map is used to study ABS performance and the bifurcation phenomenon under the variation of vehicle parameters such as threshold values, speeds, and road conditions for several control laws. From the results of parametric study, the effectiveness of these control laws is assessed and design considerations are also suggested. It is concluded that P2R prime condition performs much better than others under the variation of vehicle parameters.
