Abstract

The Sexual Violence Special Interest group (SVIG) was established in July 2010 as a subgroup of the Adolescent Special Interest Group (ASIG) after the identification of a need for a specialist group in this area. The impact of sexual violence on the emotional, sexual, mental and physical well-being of survivors is considerable and sobering statistics show that there is much work yet to be done to redress this. Domestic abuse remains the leading cause of morbidity in women 19–44 years old worldwide, greater than cancer, war and car accidents. On average, two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner in the UK.

Historically, there have been multiple barriers to male survivors disclosing domestic or sexual violence.
