Abstract

OBJECTIVE To analysis suicide reports anomie in newspaper in Guangdong Province,and compared with suicide reports in 2011 for assessment of reporting quality and making recommendations.

METHODS Based on WHO media guidelines,this study systematically assessed the characteristics of 4 kinds of newspaper in 2014 and compared the results with same-origin reports in 2011.Content analysis was conducted to evaluate each report on 5 domains and 27 parameters.

RESULTS There were 357 suicide reports in 2014.Compared to 2011,the comparison result showed that several aspects complied with WHO guideline better:expressed condolences (+ 3.4%),provided the information of helplines (+3.4%),mentioned the precursor to suicide (+ 11.9%),reported mental disorder related to suicide (+ 6.0%),mentioned the mental wounds to suicides' relatives (+ 0.6%),reported suicide as mono-causality (-8.8%),published the site photos (-7.2%),described the method of suicide in detail (-6.2%),mentioned the place of suicide (-4.2%),beautified the suicidal behavior (-0.7%),the percentage of reports on front page (-3.0%),in the headlines (-8.4%).Several aspects' non-compliance with WHO guideline got worse:consultation with experts when listing facts (-2.5%),precise describe the result (-7.0%),pointing other ways besides suicide (-2.9%),censuring the suicides (+ 18.7%),presenting the relics or suicide notes (+ 13.6%),used over-exaggerating words (+9.3%),reported with photos of suicides (+ 5.1%) and people involved (+ 1.9%).

CONCLUSION Non-compliant suicide articles in newspapers are still prevalent in 2014 of Guangdong Province.To maximally avoid the negative effects on the audience,it is necessary to take efforts to improve mass media supervision and quality of suicide reports.
