Abstract

Drowning, a leading cause of death from unintentional injury in the United States, accounted for approximately 4,600 fatalities in 1991 (1,2). Although 25%-50% of adolescents and adults who drowned had consumed alcohol near the time of death (3), information regarding drinking behaviors during aquatic activities is limited. To assist in refining strategies for prevention of alcohol-related injury in aquatic settings, during July 15-September 30, 1991, the Boston University School of Public Health surveyed a national sample of adolescents and adults regarding their participation in aquatic activities and associated alcohol use. This report summarizes these findings.
