Abstract

This article explores current research on the etiology of sexual abuse, psychological treatment strategies for those who abuse children, and how this can be applied to Catholic priests. After summarizing Catholic Church teachings on the issue of chaste celibacy, focusing especially on those spiritual elements that must be addressed in any Catholic model of treatment, two recommendations are made for screening potential priesthood candidates and developing a comprehensive program that can provide a balance of psychological and spiritual approaches in treatment.
