Abstract

This study examined the responses of nine sex offenders who have participated in multiple sex offender treatment programs, regarding their personal treatment experiences. A questionnaire was administered that included open-ended questions about content and process issues in sex offender therapy. Qualitative analysis revealed that process issues are central to the sex offender treatment experience, and that there are vast perceived differences with respect to three interrelated emergent themes: offenders' trust toward individual professionals, the overall motivational climate between various programs, and openness and acceptance by professionals.

FINDINGS seem to illuminate substantial variation in professionals' attitudes and practices that relate to correctional treatment and supervision. Subsequent implications for sex offender therapy are also discussed.
