Abstract

This new research highlights the critical role played by health care professionals--doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and other primary care providers--in discerning the signs of domestic violence in the lives of their patients. The authors describe their study of callers to the National Domestic Violence hotline where participants were asked if their medical practitioners had done any screening for DV. Although they note that awareness of domestic violence among medical professionals is higher than in the past, according to these findings too few females, and even fewer males, are being screened.
