Abstract

Secondary students exhibiting severe aggressive, disengaged or avoidant behaviours are at high risk of negative psychosocial outcomes. The assessment of motivation for self-directed change remains an important consideration within intervention planning. The Behaviour Change Checklist (BCC) was designed to assess student: (1) recognition of behaviours, (2) recognition of behaviours as "problems" and (2) motivation for intentional and self-directed change. An 18-item behavioural checklist, with a rating scale aligned to the Transtheoretical Model, was reviewed by experts and refined through a pilot study (n = 71). Psychometric validation occurred through a broader pretest (n = 504) and post-test (n = 439) evaluation study of a wilderness intervention for youth at risk. The article reports on the design, piloting and validation of the BCC.
