Abstract

A tanker may become unstable and overturn on a slope when the overall centre of gravity shifts due to the fluid inside finding its own level. The centre of gravity analysis presented here is the essential first step in a stability analysis of tankers which may be driven in any direction onto a slope with any quantity of fluid in the tank, from empty to full. The analysis covers circular and rectangular cross-section tanks, and gives formulae for the entire range of part volumes and moments of part volume needed to compute the centre of gravity of all quantities of fluid at all attitudes in either shape of tank. The analysis has been computer programmed and checked numerically. It was conceived with farm tankers in mind, but may be applied to any tank which is fluid filled.
