Abstract

Although previous research has shown among adults a significant relationship between impulsiveness and the Type A behaviour pattern (TABP), those studies have not taken cognizance of the multidimensional character of impulsiveness. This study explored the relationship between the TABP, the major personality dimensions as identified by Eysenck and Eysenck (1975) and impulsiveness among 170 adolescents (M AGE = 16.51 yr). Although Type A (total score) was found to correlate significantly with impulsiveness narrowly defined, the patterns of intercorrelations between the other dimensions of impulsiveness and the TABP differed for the two sexes. In addition, Type A (total score) correlated significantly with neuroticism for both sexes but did not correlate significantly with a measure of `sociability' among males although it did among females (r = 0.24, P lt 0.01). This latter finding is interpreted in the light of feminist theory, while some suggestions for future research are made.
