Abstract

Estimated 4.6 million people nationwide are reported to have some form of dementia, and according to some estimates, this number is expected to grow to 7 million over the next decade. There have been numerous reports of traffic accidents and missing persons cases involving those with dementia, and railroad related accidents continue to persist with accidents that involve people with dementia or those who may have dementia -- including getting run over by trains -- numbering 149 with 115 fatalities over the eight year period from 2005. In this paper the authors seek to uncover the issues faced by people with dementia and their caregivers when using the train system, and to suggest approaches for future countermeasures. Safety within communities and the watchful eyes of community members, as well as other forms of support are key since half the seniors with dementia reside at their homes.
