Abstract

Each year in the United States, more than 50,000 children are injured as pedestrians, of whom approximately 1,800 die, 18,000 are admitted to the hospital, and 5,000 have significant long-term sequelae. Prevention must rest on a multifaceted approach at the local, state, and national level and should include pedestrian skills training programs, parent education, legislation, environmental modifications, and vehicle design changes.
