Abstract

The safety bene ts of reducing speed limits and managing travelling speeds is well proven. However, practitioners involved in reviewing and setting speed limits continue to include practices that are based on assumptions. This paper uses a case study to apply established road safety models while challenging established practices that limit the potential for safety benefits. The next step is to better understand, through research, the range of effects on driver behaviour when speed limits are reduced and to develop physical devices suitable to safely moderate travelling speeds on higher-speed roads.
