Abstract

Speed is the single element of road safety that, with management, can drive down the number of deaths and serious injuries sufficiently to allow a chance to deliver the global road safety targets within the existing time frames and budgets. Speed is the toxic element contributing to both crash occurrence and severity. The laws of physics apply globally. Research shows predictable reductions in death and injury relating to speed reduction, with benefits all road users. A focus on speed management is consistent with the successful Safe System approach.
