Abstract

BACKGROUND: Domestic Violence is  a universal wide-spread phenomenon and variation in its prevalence occurs all over the world. However the societal violence  differs from country to country with various levels of socio-economic development. Bhutan is no exceptional. Bhutanese women have been the victims of domestic violence like any other women in the world. The violence against women is truly a global phenomenon taking place in all sections of the society in different forms. In Bhutan, the gender based problem is not a big issue like some of our neighboring countries. Women can participate in every aspect of development and can enjoy high degree of freedom and rights. But the existence of domestic violence against women in Bhutan cannot be denied. Most women in Bhutan along with their families are less likely to report rape, domestic abuse or any other violence in a "culture of silence."   Methods: A descriptive cross sectional quantitative survey was conducted in March-April. Multistage sampling was applied to obtain the sample size of 300. Chi-Square analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with the prevalence of domestic violence.

RESULTS: The prevalence of domestic violence is 44% which includes all forms of violence ; control, emotional, physical and sexual violence. Emotional violence is high 36% compare to other form of control, physical violence and sexual violence.

CONCLUSION: The districts, occupation and education have the significant  value with the violence in the chi-square analysis.
