Abstract

This paper provides an overview of a programme of research on the history of modern punishment that uses the work of Norbert Elias as its theoretical frame of reference. It sketches in the contours of this programme while at the same time showing how this work can provide a critical point of departure from both Foucauldian and postmodernist scholarship in this area.
