Abstract

The demand for the safety of rail transportation is increasing, this is due to the actual increase in speed on current railways. The H-type sleeper, which has a much higher resistance than the existing mono sleeper, has recently been developed in order to increase track stiffness and to reduce any irregularities on the tracks. In this paper, the characteristics of the static track behavior of the H-type sleeper were analyzed. For this research, a three-dimensional numerical analysis (Abaqus) was employed, along with the analysis on the vertical displacement of rail, the variation of load distribution ratio and the distribution characteristics of ballast pressure compared to those of tracks with mono sleepers according to the support conditions. In uniform support condition, the load distribution ratio, vertical displacement of rail, the size and ratio of on-track pressure distribution per support condition and the sleeper type for a track with H-type sleepers and mono sleepers turned out to be very similar. In hanging sleeper conditions, vertical displacement of the rail with H-type sleepers is reduced compared to that of the rail with mono sleepers, and a concentration phenomenon of load on the sleepers adjacent to hanging sleepers. However high ballast pressure can happen at the bottom of the Conn member of the H-type sleeper, it would be resolved through the geometry modification of the Conn member.
