Abstract

Domestic violence during pregnancy is a serious public health problem associated with adverse reproductive health issues, which seems to be related to unwanted pregnancy. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between unwanted pregnancy and domestic violence during pregnancy among women referring to health centers of Gachsaran city. This is a cross-sectional study in which 526 eligible women were enrolled in the study using convenience sampling method. The data collection instrument was a self-administered questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics and questions on unwanted pregnancy and domestic violence. The validity of questionnaire was assessed by content validity and its reliability was determined through test- retest method and Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The statistical analyses were carried out using SPSS 15 software, descriptive statistical tests, t-test, Mann Whitney and Chi-square. . The findings of this study showed that 42.8% of women suffered from violence by in intimate partner during pregnancy with 32.1% prevalence of unwanted pregnancy Also, 40% of women experiencing violence reported unwanted pregnancy compared to 26.2% of women who did not experience any violence. It indicates that women who suffer violence by an intimate partner are 1.8 times more likely to have unwanted pregnancies. According to the results, unwanted pregnancy is related to domestic violence during pregnancy. Therefore, early detection of violence and appropriate interventions measures during pregnancy can help prevent its negative effects on the health of mothers and the fetus.
