Abstract |
Use of outcome measures (OMs) can enhance clinical practice and research. It is essential that an outcome measure (OM) have strong psychometric properties as well as feasibility for clinic use. Selecting the right OM involves gathering information, such as reliability, validity, time and equipment required to administer the measure. The Neurology Section of the APTA assembled task forces to make recommendations about which OMs to use for specific neurologic populations. The goal of these recommendations is to increase the use of OMs in clinical practice and research through a more efficient and effective process for OM selection. Additionally, the recommendations include detailed information that will contribute to interpretation of results and clinical decision-making. The Spinal Cord Injury Evaluation Database to Guide Effectiveness (EDGE) Task Force has reviewed a comprehensive list of 63 OMs that broadly represent constructs addressed by physical therapists within all categories of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. The Spinal Cord Injury EDGE Task Force (SCITF) has provided a rating for each measure based on multiple categories, as well as recommendations related to use of OMs in research and entry level education. Recommendations will be readily available to clinicians, researchers and educators to inform decision-making relative to use of OMs in their practice. Language: en |
