Abstract

Over the last few years a number of Middle Eastern countries have experienced an important change from authoritarian to more liberal forms of government. In the post‐cold war era the United States is the only superpower in the world. Moreover, American interests in the area are tremendous. Consequently, the United States's choice is essential for development in the area and American interests there. This study examines the options available for policymakers.
