Abstract

Alienation among Protestants in Northern Ireland was tested by a small empirical study carried out just before the current cease fires were declared. The results indicate the existence of real and complex feelings of unease and uncertainty among Protestants, justifying use of the term alienation. The intricate nature of these feelings is explored and analyzed with respect to a range of themes including politics, legislation, security, community development, media, culture, and identity. The implications for economic and social policy are examined, as are the dangers to the peace process that exist if there is no attempt to deal with disaffection and insecurity.
