Abstract

This paper is primarily concerned with what actions banks, mainly Canadian ones, are taking and ought to take in order to guard themselves against various manifestations of terrorism. Canadian banks generally do not perceive any immediate threats from terrorists per se, but measures are now being adopted that have helped to reduce such crimes as extortion, hostageā€taking, and kidnapping. The author recommends various countermeasures, including the creation of an executive committee in all larger banks and corporations in addition to crisis management teams which should be aware of potential threats and, in cooperation with law enforcement agencies, are skilled in bringing such terrorist events to a successful conclusion for the victims.
