Abstract

Most back injury research and the safety programs based on its findings have assumed disc and vertebral failure to be the result of compression and/or shear forces. This paper draws on selected references along with a knowledge of how materials fail under simple and combined stresses to postulate alternative failure mechanisms which, if proven, could lead to improvements in back injury prevention programs.
