Abstract

As counselors become familiar with the literature related to family counseling, many are accepting the challenge of working with the family of an identified client. Herein lies the counselor's predicament and frustration. Theoretical models that most counselors have studied help them explain dysfunctions, but many of the models offer little assistance with therapeutic interventions. What passes for family interviews and group interventions are often nothing more than individual counseling conducted in a group setting. The purpose of this special issue of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work is to help the practitioner conceptualize individual behavior in the context of family group dynamics and to offer some techniques that can be applied when working with family-related issues.
