Abstract

Inappropriate behaviors that occurred often in three severely retarded adolescents were identified, measured, and designated as more preferred. Behaviors seldom observed in these persons were identified and designated as less preferred. The less preferred behaviors were made contingent on the emission of the more preferred behaviors. There was an immediate, substantial and consistent suppression of the more preferred behaviors. The procedure, based on Premack's punishment hypothesis, was called negative preference management. Some possible advantages of negative preference management as an applied behavioral reduction procedure were discussed.
