Abstract

Child abuse and neglect received diagnostic status only as recently as 1961. Since then, reports of child abuse and neglect have increased along with an increase in programs aimed at its treatment and prevention. Currently, all 50 states have child abuse reporting laws and most have reasonably functional hot-line services. Child abuse and neglect represents a community health problem of major dimensions. As a result, interactions among many community agencies have become necessary to facilitate treatment and prevention. The purpose of this article is to present a brief history of the recognition of child abuse and neglect as a major societal problem; to review the literature describing large-scale service or research projects; to discuss the social learning underpinnings and ecological approach of one such program, Project 12-Ways; to provide recommendations for further community treatment and prevention efforts; and to note two particular issues related to child abuse and neglect that merit further consideration.
