Abstract

In treating children and youth exhibiting autistic and other severe behavior disorders, the question of whether or not to employ aversive contingencies often arises. This paper discusses issues that practitioners must take into consideration if aversive procedures are used. After discussing the problem behaviors that might be treated, several types of restrictive and aversive procedures are described. Before implementing such procedures, several essential steps and safeguards must be in place. Systems of treatment evaluation and staff training are reviewed as well as methods used to functionally analyze maladaptive behaviors. The use of restrictive procedures is discussed in the context of alternatives to aversive contingencies and basing treatment strategies on the scientific literature.
