Abstract

In this paper, we present the results of a case study in which we attempted to reduce aberrant repetitive vocalizations exhibited by an adolescent male diagnosed with autism. A multiple baseline design, combined with a withdrawal of treatment design was used to analyze the effects of music non-contingently and contingently applied across four settings. Additionally, data were gathered for analysis of the effects of the intervention on other aberrant, repetitive responses and task performance. The results indicated that the intervention was associated with dramatic reductions in the primary aberrant behavior, as well as with reductions in the two other aberrant behaviors observed. Additionally, task performance was differentially affected by the intervention. The results were discussed in terms of effective, non-aversive interventions for the reduction of aberrant, repetitive behaviors in classrooms.
