Abstract

In this paper, we raise issues related to the impact of environmental and social structures on friendship development for children with behavior disorders. Home, school, and community environments all have structures that impact the types of peer relationships formed, the types of activities that friends engage in together, and the depth of the interaction and intimacy that develops. In informal dialogues with several children and adolescents with behavior disorders and their parents, we explore the contexts of these various social structures. Using examples drawn from these conversations, we focus our discussion on how access to potential friends, encouragement for interaction, and continuity of relationships impact friendship development for children with behavior disorders. Implications for further research surrounding these issues are discussed.
