Abstract

In recent years, there has been a notable increased emphasis on providing psychological and educational services to preschool-age children with social-emotional problems. The reasons for this increased emphasis range from changing social and economic conditions to the impact of new federal legislation mandating services to young children and their families. However, the dissemination of new service delivery techniques for use with this population has not appeared to keep pace with the need. The focus of this article is on a specific aspect of psychological and educational service delivery with the early childhood/preschool population: conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of social-emotional problems. Various new and promising findings, materials, and techniques are reviewed. Implications for treatment of young children with significant social-emotional problems are presented.
