Abstract

Cognitive behavior therapy has proven useful in treating a population of emotionally and behaviorally disturbed adolescents placed in a residential treatment facility. The child's verbalizations in treatment may serve as a measure of his or her illogical or unrealistic cognitions. It may be possible to devise strategies to effect cognitive change and to use verbalizations to identify positive therapeutic movement. The ideas presented here derived from experience at a Residential Treatment Facility (RTF) for adoleacents with both child welfare and mental health involvement and failures in previous hospitalizations and placements. Cognitive therapy is used as one approach in a multi-faceted program.
